BG-420, Prized First Period Round 50 Cent
1853 50C Liberty Round 50 Cents, BG-420, Low R.7, MS63 PCGS. Die State II, with a die crack through star 2. This is a rare Period One variety from the end of California's small-change economy, an awkward period between the disappearing high denomination private mintages and the opening of the San Francisco Mint. There are at most 13 separate examples of the BG-420, and possibly fewer. The obverse dentils on this example are complete, while the reverse shows some rim crumble along the left edge. The greenish-gold surfaces display occasional semireflective character, while there are no distracting marks -- only a few minor abrasions.
