An interesting and very rare post Civil War state issue, this $1 was part of a series authorized by an act of the general assembly passed on March 31, 1885. These notes were used to provide for the redemption of notes of the old Bank of Tennessee. The notes were receivable for taxes and any other indebtedness that came due before 1884. Hugh Shull estimated a surviving population of only 5-15 examples in his southern states catalog.
